Early 1996-Former "Spike" & "CJSS" bandmates Les Sharp & Mike Skimmerhorn were playing
together in the local rock band "Tongue".They both agreed that "Tongue" had run is course & decided it was time for something
new. After a bit of brainstorming, they brought in guitarist Eric Fenton & bass player Myron Engelke and "Black Bone Cat"
was born. This incarnation made it through a couple of gigs. Soon after, Eric left the band.
Summer 1996-In need of a guitar player, the guys brought in Brian Coleman. Brian was playing
with the party rock band "Snidely Whiplash" at the time. Rehearsals began, a new band photo was taken & the
band was nearly set for it's first gig with the new guitar player. It was at this time that Myron announced he was leaving
the band to join the Top 40/dance band "Local Aliens". Brian immediately mentioned a bass player/singer he had worked with,
most recently in "Snidely Whiplash". David Wade was brought in for an impromtu audition & after some convincing on Brian's
part, was in to fill the void. With a 2 week deadline, the guys rehearsed at a fever pitch. Brian & Dave were pulling
double duty....rehearsing with "BBC" & finishing up their commitment with "Snidely". The Skimmerhorn/Coleman/Wade/Sharp
era "BBC" debuted in August of 1996. The band gelled immediately & continued with this lineup forever & ever.
THE END
Spring 2003-NOT SO FAST! Mike shocked the band with news that he was departing, effective
immediately. With no time or desire to replace him, the band decided to continue as a 3 piece unit.
late 2004-After more than a year & a half working as a 3 piece, the additional workload
began to take it's toll. The guys were beaten down & it was obvious to those that saw them during this period. Our desire
to continue was waning & something had to be done. Brian & Dave approached Les about a singer he had worked with in
"CJSS". Russell Jinkens was just what the doctor ordered-energetic, fun & a breath of fresh air. We played a few gigs
with this lineup, but scheduling conflicts & matters outside of music prohibited this version of the band from gaining
momentum. Bill Fuss, our sound engineer at the time, mentioned a guitar player/singer he had worked with in the past. Rick
Kern, formerly of the southeastern Indiana band "Daddy Banned It" was contacted. Rick,s addition to the band was seamless. It
was evident that he was a perfect fit & looking back, it's a shame it didn't happen sooner. I think it's safe to
say that without Rick, we wouldn't still be here. His contribution has helped reshape & motivate the band to a higher
standard.
now & beyond-This is a time of bliss for the Cats with Black Bones (I still don't know
what a Black Bone Cat is). Where there was once tension & competition there is now a very relaxed, team driven unit with
each man having complete confidence in the man next to him. We get along as friends better than ever before & the
mutual respect that comes with that is truly amazing. They say a cat has 9 lives. If each life is this fulfilling,
9 may not be enough.
